“Growing up, life was marked by pain, brokenness, and addiction. My father struggled with alcoholism for many years, which ultimately led him to take his own life. As a five-year-old in 1965, I witnessed this tragedy that changed my life forever. I was standing in the doorway of my parents’ bedroom when I witnessed my father violently end his life with a gunshot to the head. The pain of that moment left wounds that followed me for years, but looking back, God protected me from remembering any awful details. I struggled to understand why such a devastating event had happened and carried some weight of grief and confusion well into adulthood.
My father's suicide shattered our family. As the youngest, I watched both of my older sisters carry the heavy burden of that trauma for years. The pain contributed to destructive choices, addiction, and suicide in both their lives. However, I was not immune to addiction. For a season, I became addicted to cocaine and amphetamines, but through the grace of God was able to defeat these addictions. At that time, I really did not know who God was, but looking back, knowing what I know now, God's grace was working in my life way before I recognized it or knew Him.
Today, my testimony is not about the power of addiction but about the power of God. The same God who carried me through the loss of my father, the heartbreak of seeing addiction destroy my sisters’ lives, and the bondage of my own substance abuse is the God who redeemed me and gave me a new purpose. My past is a reminder of where God has brought me from, and my life is evidence that no one is beyond His reach.
